Children

We help resolve matters relating to the parenting of your children, by providing a forum for you to discuss the best path forward for their care.  We understand that this can be a highly emotional subject, with matters relating to children often proving difficult to mediate without professional intervention.  With years of experience in this sector, we are able to provide you with an unbiased, non-judgmental forum to discuss what is best for your children.  We can also do the same kind of mediation for pet care disputes.

Finance

Financial disputes are common in relationships undergoing changes – we can help by making sure the full picture is considered, and provide you with the tools for healthy conversations around financial decisions for your future.  Money is often a highly contentious subject for people undergoing changes in personal relationships – we provide assistance by trying to take the emotion out of these situations, and providing a space for your concerns to be heard and addressed.

Property

We understand that sometimes there can be conflict over what is often one of the largest assets a family collectively has to manage – a property.  If that’s where you live, where you own and make a living from, or where your children live, this aspect of relationship changes can be challenging to navigate without the right forum to do so.  We can provide that forum, and make sure when you do come to a mutually agreeable decision, it is documented correctly.

How we operate for you

Practicing in England and Wales, and as a member of Resolution, Safe Space Mediation offers mediation services over online mediums such as Zoom, and limited in-person mediation where required in the West London and Berkshire area.  We are specialists in family mediation services, catering to a wide range of clients across the UK.  Mediation offers a more expedient, cost-effective, and robust foundation for future communication compared to solicitor-led negotiations or court applications.

It helps to reduce conflict, stress, and anxiety, empowering you and your ex-partner to exert greater control over the situation rather than entrusting the outcome to a judge in a court setting.  Our mediation services provide comprehensive support, including the formulation of a parenting plan and the negotiation of a financial settlement should you need one.  Should an agreement be reached through mediation, it can be formally documented into a legally binding consent order by a solicitor.

What is Mediation?

If you and your ex-partner encounter difficulties in reaching consensus on the issues arising from separation or divorce, such as financial division or child custody arrangements, mediation can be a valuable tool to facilitate the resolution of your differences.

In the realm of family law, mediation is a structured process that involves you and your ex-partner collaborating with a trained mediator to achieve a mutually agreed-upon resolution to a specific matter.

Initially, you and your ex-partner will attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM), where the mediator will provide an overview of the mediation process and ascertain whether mediation is the appropriate course of action for your circumstances.

The MIAM presents an opportunity for you and your ex-partner to engage in private discussions with the mediator regarding your individual needs and priorities. This facilitates the mediator’s ability to provide targeted support in facilitating an agreement, having had direct communication with both parties prior to the commencement of negotiations.

Attendance at a MIAM is mandatory under the recently implemented Family Procedure Rules, unless you are exempt from this requirement. However, mediation itself is not obligatory if the mediator determines that it is not the most suitable approach.

Types of Mediation

Traditional mediation

The clients and the mediator work together in the same room, putting an emphasis on face-to-face communication and open dialogue.
Shuttle mediation

Face-to-face communication may not be suitable for some clients, so shuttle mediation works by the mediator moving between two rooms, gathering information and facilitating negotiation. This can also be offered online through the use of break out rooms on zoom.
Online mediation

Geographical or personal issues may prevent individuals from meeting in person – online mediation allows for more flexibility.
Child-inclusive mediation

Where appropriate, children can be involved in the discussion, represented by a trained child consultant, ensuring their wishes and feelings are heard in their parents’ negotiation.
Hybrid mediation

Individuals are in separate rooms, and each person is allowed their solicitor in the room with them to consult with as they move through decision-making.
